Second time staying here. Never disappointed

We were treated to Amazing breakfast and dinners and wee served by very elegant waitress.

Big, nice room and good space for 2 pax. There is a sofa area with table and we enjoyed supper in our room. We booked half board, dinner was keiseki and breakfast with a view. The onsen is quite big and you can also enjoy a soak in the room with the wooden tub. Hotel is walking distance from shopping area which has a lot to offer. There isn't much to pick however, i believe there is always room for improvement. If everything can be up a notch then it will be perfect!

We had the junior suite with an amazing view of the city and the Matsuyama Castle. Our room was top notch with living room, bar area and separate bedroom. We loved it! The staff was efficient, polite and very professional. the location was perfect, just a walk down the hill to the famous Dogo onsen shopping arcade and train to castle. there wasn't anything that we did not like.

The staff were very nice and helpful. The room was spacious and had beautiful views. They advertised the restaurant as a top dining establishment in Matsuyama so we didn't hesitate to pay for a very expensive meal. However we found the food to be the worst we had in all of Japan. We prepaid for our dinner so we were very disappointed with the quality, taste and ambiance of the restaurant. The breakfast wasn't much better

Excellent breakfast. Great facilities. Wonderful staff!

Loved the Japanese style room , it has an outdoor mini garden & wood bathtub. If you want to connect in nature in the premises of the hotel, you could just be lazy by the garden on their tiny cottages watch and listen to flowing water from the mountains. It would be very convenient if food could be served in the room. I have a baby and 2 toddlers that’s why. Anyways food is great!

Location and the garden The suite we had was huge but poorly laid out with a lot of unusable space. Also, very dated and run down and poorly maintained. Way over priced.

Lovely part-tatami room in a ryokan in the Dogo Onsen area of Matsuyama. The location is great with the Dogo Onsen Honkan, shopping area and tram stop all within 5 minutes' walk. There is also easy access by tram to sights and restaurants in central Matsuyama, as well as Matsuyama Station. Breakfast was great, the onsen and garden were nice for relaxing and the staff were helpful. Everything was great.

Spacious room. During meals, English menu was provided and also staff made an effort to let us know what is the food we are having in English. Helped to park the car. Helped moved the luggage upstairs and showed us to the room. Allowed us to park the car a little longer until 12pm while we went to the Shinto shrine nearby and did a bit of last minute shopping. The breakfast and dinner is mediocre at best for the price. I travelled around Chugoku and Shikoku on this trip and other ryokan (which is also cheaper) served more exquisite kaiseki and in larger portions. I expected a little more at this price point. We also had to pay for coffee (even thought they didn’t charge for 1 refill). It was really quite cold when we were there but there wasn’t a thicker jacket to go with the yukata for outdoors.

We enjoyed our stay here , good location , friendly staff and the rooms were lovely
-
An exceptional traditional Japanese experience without dated furniture and shared bathroom. We understand why Japanese royalty stays here because that is how we felt. Exceptional Nothing. Exceptional experience
-
We booked to stay for three nights . The breakfast was not to my liking For three nights stay the hotel should vary the variety of foods
-
Wonderful & pleasant staff. Loved their service & bkfast & dinner. Thanks for serving us our French dinner even when we r an hour late. Slippers for onsen. Painful.. Has to check out at 10am!

I would rate Funaya an 11 if I could. I have stayed in some nice onsen ryokans before but this place is next level in every aspect. Everything about my stay here made me say "wow". The visual aesthetic and atmosphere of the building is super charming, a bit dated some might say but to me it just spoke to the long history of the place. The staff are friendly, helpful, and the service was impeccable. I found that their manner was a little more human than other high end ryokans I've stayed at where the staff can be a bit robotic sticking to their script all the time. Our room was massive, literally the biggest ryokan room I've ever seen. 12 tatami mats for the main room, another 8 off to the side in another room - plus the sitting alcove by the window, meditation/writing room, not to mention the bathroom with double sink, separate adjoining washroom with wooden Japanese bathtub, a separate toilet, and a substantial hallway linking it all up. Oh, that was just the "standard Japanese style room" too. We also had a nice little balcony with a view of the garden and the castle in the distance. The garden is a real highlight, beautiful, tranquil, there's even a foot bath. I really wish we'd been able to spend more time in it but it rained the day we were there. Meals were fantastic. Set kaiseki for dinner, which I don't normally like, but my partner and I just swapped things we didn't like and we were able to really enjoy it. Breakfast we had the choice of western or Japanese style - we had one of each and both were great. Nice not to have to deal with cold food at the buffet for a change. The actual baths are top notch, probably equal best I've used. Lots of space to wash, a couple of separate baths for soaking, and outdoor baths as well to cool off on the night air. Water temperature was perfect. We were able to leave our car with them for a bit after checking out to go for one last wander in Dogo. It's a little on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for.... I guess I didn't like that I couldn't afford to stay more nights here.

Both the Japanese as well as the western style breakfast were very good! The atmosphere in a Ryokan was agreat experience, and the Onsen was another highlight.
